When I was a kid (born 1960) Johann Cruyff was only second to George Best in popularity with my school mates. Everyone wanted to be like him, and as Crackle posted above, that was the first (and only skill) many schoolboys had (me included).

In fairness, Brazil were average in the 1970's.
The Dutch could have won both the 1974 and 1978 World Cups. The reason Cruyff wasn't at the 1978 World Cup tells you all you need to know about why they didn't win either.

I think you'll find there's a FIFA regulation which prohibits any team who lose to Scotland from winning a tournament.
