The critic's right to criticise, now there's a topic.

Mind, I think off-topic snidey attacks on other members are now frowned on on here.

One or two exponents are no longer with us.

Mind how you go.

I rarely watch Jools because my wife doesn't like televised music. Don't particularly like his show either, but will watch if there's a specific act that I want to catch.

Last night? I went to bed at 11pm as I'm working today

After 2016 I didn't bother seeing 2017 in but I did tape the fireworks.Very Good.

Ending up bouncing between Hoot' & Robbie:

Hoot' was absolute dross last night - we have tuned into Jools's show for years and it is normally a great mix of hot contemporary bands and really good up and coming artists.

Last night's show was utterly lame apart from Imelda May who was pretty good.

As for John Cooper Clarke / Roy Wood / Chaka Khan / UB40 & daughter / ABC - what a motley collection of has-beens / never-haves.. Same goes for that ridiculous dog puppet whose name escapes me.

Even the front row audience has diminished in quality these past few years and Jools's comments and attempted witticisms just fall flat.

Absolutely epic fail.

The alternative was 'Well Up My Own *rse Robbie' - he's knocked out some decent hits over the years but his voice (never more than modestly ok) was utterly dire esp' in the second half after the fireworks. As for the trouser undoing and hand down the front malarkey for Christ sake grow up fella. And the self-indulgent 'me & my dad' duet was crass beyond belief.

Enjoyed the firework show though.

Happy New Year.

You are so right. It is awful when we lose people, especially the ones who have intelligent insight to offer.

Have I missed something? I have noticed that a couple of regular and long-term posters on CC seem to have dropped off the grid in the past few weeks

To be honest, I find the show to be good post-pub entertainment. Maybe it helps to have had a few and be in a crowded kitchen?

I used to watch The Word in my yoof when I got back from the pub so perhaps I'm growing up

I thought Robbie Williams wasn't too bad, although I didn't see him messing around with his trousers which sounds inappropriate, crass, and stupid.

Equally, some bad language in the second half was also badly judged.

One thing he does well is connect with the audience, which he did on the bit I saw last night.

Voice sounded OK to me, he hit the big notes as opposed to Roy Wood who missed several small ones.

I used t watch Jools avidly, but not now, esp since I read about how much of an agent/elitist thing it can be to get on his show, not just genuine talent spotted out there in the pubs and clubs.

However, Jools himself is a very talented musician, but not the most inspiring of presenters. I like his piano style, personally, just wish he'd not try to accompany quite so many people.

Hootenanny (just going through watching bit I like etc)
Ruby Turner: bit of a grand old dame of British soul these days. Used to be great, but a bit safe and dull these days, much like Jools himself.
Seasick Steve: I think he first got widely known through his appearance on a hootenanny... still got it, even f not quite such a revelation any more.
Gregory Porter: take that bloody hat off mate; it used to be intriguing, not it just looks silly. But you have a great voice.
Chaka Khan: she's aways had a great voice. Growing old disgracefully, in a good way.
Christine and the Queens: ???? you what?
Rag and Bone Man: great voice
Roy Wood: has earned the right to be indulged a bit.
Caravan Palace: interesting take on Black Betty, but... not so sure it worked. The singer has a certain spark about her though.
ABC/Martin Fry: still got it. Lexicon of Love II is a terrific album
UB40: Used to like their stuff, but Ali Campbell' voice grates on me
Imelda May: marry me, please.
John Cooper Clarke: hmm... stick to the poetry mate... like someone's pissed uncle at the pub karaoke

@Rickshaw Phil and I went to see Jools Holland in concert at Shrewsbury Quarry a few years back now. Crikey it rained like a monsoon and the ground turned into a quagmire. There had been much beer and wine drunk and poor Phil ended up toppling off his chair as it sank into the mud .

He will probably shoot me for posting this, but it was funny!!
