Last night was Craft Night, so I got a lift out with a friend to the house it's held at (16 miles out of town, and a road I don't fancy in the dark coming home).

Anyway, this friend has a 2CV, so it's proper motoring, the sort where you can feel crosswinds, and lumps on the road, and hear the engine (but little else).

Just after Sutton-upon-Derwent, where they have scoured the top off the road prior to resurfacing, for the entire mile or so length of the village, my friend said "Oh!" and "What's that on my knee?".

It was the indicator stalk. Fortunately, we were going straight on for some time, so I picked it up - still attached to its cable, but dangling. For a while we thought we might have to do the rest of the trip with me doing the indicating, holding the housing and flipping the stalk, but a moment's examination showed me how to reattach it - the whole thing had simply vibrated up and off the clip that holds it to the steering column. So I just bunged it back on, and all was well, and we giggled about it the rest of the way.

Can't do that with your modern cars. But then I suppose the indicator stalk doesn't often fall off...

I remember when the indicators broke on my mate's Morris Minor. I signalled for left turns by holding a banana out of the passenger window.

I've had to do that (minus the banana) on my friend's other car, an Ami Super, when the electrics were playing up. We were driving out to riding in a blizzard, but with the wind behind us, and she wound the window down to indicate right, turned and then got a blast of cold air and snow in through the open window.

Actually I've had the indicator stalk break off on me on a peugeot, just like that.

The good thing was, that this hadn't broken off, just vibrated out of its clip/housing, hence it was so easy to repair. It was a bit of a Top Gear moment, her driving and me fiddling with the steering column...

2CVs are great like that. I'm watching a Dyane on ebay at the moment, I'd love another one. The best one I had was one of the vans.

I have a 2CV as my second car. Sadly, my son has got too used to it and it is, at this minute somewhere between Edinburgh and Newcastle on the A1 with all his uni stuff in it. The indicator stalk does vibrate loose from time to time. you get used to just pressing it in every so often.

Well, at least my friend knows that now - it was the first time it had happened to her...

I've just had a look inside my BMW and it looks like mine has indicator stalk too!
Well I never; previous owner must have specified it as an option. Not sure how it works though.
