I had the misfortune to listen to the self aggrandising opinionated queen of inconsequence on Desert Island Discs. She managed to transform my mild dislike of her into an intense feeling of hatred.

The repeat has just started on Radio Four. I'm off to seek the calming influence of pies in Armley.

I suspect that she is a Marmite person - she's loved or hated.

Me too, I heard bits of it. Very strange voice, indeed. I couldn't match it with the noise her pen makes. And she's got that funny rising inflection at the end of phrases that people catch from trips to the antipodes. Actually, listening to her voice distracted me from whatever it was she had to say.

I listened to DID, as I often do. I listened with particular interest to Julie Burchill because I'm of the same era. Her writing formed part of the backdrop of my youth, and more.

I neither love nor hate her. It's not that simple - and Julie doesn't deserve such dismissal - but I'm closer to loving her.

Julie has her demons, obviously closer to the surface than she's perhaps prepared to admit, but she remains an essential voice.
She's the reason I stopped buying the NME.
...yet conversely she was one of the reasons I kept reading it ;)

Jon Ronson wrote a blog about hearing her, and wondering if she was a psychopath. Turns out, he shouldn't be doing such things, but it's tempting ...

As for not being able to match the voice with the pen - it's all sub-editors. I was doing some work for a Brighton magazine where she had sent her end-of-year thing summery to, and she was one of the 'names' to contribute. With most people, sub-editing is getting the grammar right and just making it read well and fit well. For her, you were essentially re-writing whole passages, the whole thing was just typing diarrhea. No idea why anybody pays her.

Another friend hated her when she got the geography of Brighton wrong in Sugar Rush. He was outraged.

Her voice reminds me of the little children in the Harry Enfield show - Harry and Lulu.

I remember when she started writing a column for the Grauniad and trying to justify her previous comments on loony left-wing yurt dwelling liberal nutters, her reasoning just didn't ring true.
