I still think she and Tony "cycling is like masturbation - you grow out of it" Parsons deserved each other. Hate them both.

Intensely irritating on DID, to such an extent that I had to turn it off despite her choosing Freda Payne's Band of Gold

Agreed rich, 'Band of Gold' was an excellent pick and I loved her reasoning for it. Her 2nd choice wasn't bad either but, in all honesty, I couldn't really work out was was motivating the rest. The thing they perhaps all had in common was a stirring emotional content. I'd really like to understand Julie's identifying with the nation of Israel. She does like to be contrary (as we all know!) but I felt there was actually something genuine underpinning it (rather than a simple desire to mark out her difference).

I raised an eye brow to her admission that she didn't like punk. I can well believe it but it never-the-less played an important part in her life - even if only as something to define herself by/against.

Reminds me of a line in The Smiths 'Panic' (the "Hang the DJ one") - something like "it says nothing to me about my life" ('it' being the music played in discos). I always thought it quite the opposite and the dislike of such music said a great deal, defined even.

Spooky....

A song has just started on the radio, a contemporary of Julie Burchill - both in era and journalism - Chrissie Hynde. 'I'll Stand By You'. The opening lines always send shivers down my spine.

I will unashamedly admit to loving Chrissie Hynde. She sings it like it is.

I remember when she started writing a column for the Grauniad and trying to justify her previous comments on loony left-wing yurt dwelling liberal nutters, her reasoning just didn't ring true.
I will never figure out why the Grauniad ever took her on. I mean I know why but I don't. Nothing she ever writes chimes with what I think or how I see things. She seems to live in her own self-publicising irrelevant bubble.
