Junior road bike shifters

i have bought a junior carrera tdf for my son, quite a while ago actually, he hasn't used it yet as its for his next birthday. I'm just a bit concerned the shifters/brakes will be hard to reach for little hands. Is there a way to bring the lever closer to the bars rather like you can on v brake junior bikes? They are Shimano tourney with the thumb buttons. Cheers.

You can get rubber inserts for Shimano shifters that shorten the reach of the lever.

My youngest found that Microshift shifters were easier than others for his small hands. He is also OK with the old thumb shifter style (old Sora) rather than the newer integrated type.
