I just hope the next time I see a speed trap I have the energy to sprint past at over 30mph.

I shall publish my next speed check and location, you are all invited.....anyone not exceeding 30mph will get a ticket for some obscure riding to slowly law and holding up traffic....Anyone exceding 30mph can get booked for wanton and furious pedal cycling! Oh and I can turn you all over because ALL cyclists are obviously all sandal wearing hippy pot heads (so I am reliably informed)!

I have the impression that, at least in Royal Parks, the police there ''believe'' - or at least claim - that speed limits do apply to bikes. Perhaps the legal powers are different in Royal Parks - however, I know of no case where liability has been established in a court of law. Which makes me wonder, if they're trying to enforce non-existent laws, whether that qualifies as a form of harassment.

The motor vehicles only applicability is on public roads. Royal parks, among other places, have roads but they're not public ones.

I got stopped once in Richmond Park. No prosecution, and as ever with officialdom in those circumstances I was sickeningly polite. However, when I said that I was under the impession that it's motor vehicles only he told me there are bylaws there which apply to bikes and also to horse-drawn vehicles, and they limit speeds.

How either category could be prosecuted when they don't have to have speedos, let alone checked and calibrated ones, puzzles me.

I've also read that there are bylaws covering bikes in parts of Bournemouth.

In the same way that you can be prosecuted for being over the limit with blood alcohol without needing to have your own calibrated and checked blood alcohol meter.

On my return home I pass one of those flashing signs that displays your speed and then either a happy face or sad face depending on your speed.

The trouble is, it's 10 miles into my return commute, on an uphill section so I am always tired. The other night I was cycling into a head wind and recorded my lowest ever reading of 12 mph, but the sign gave me a happy face so I felt much better.

I had one of those, my speedo was reading about 18, and the sign said I was travelling at about 35. I was starting to feel really chuffed, and thinking that I'd better recalibrate my speedo when a car overtook me

Yeah on the promenade I think there is, and they actually did use speed guns LOL. It's about 10mph or something. Kind of pathetic, unless people are cycling stupidly around pedestrians, but speed shouldn't be the issue there.

well. A bit different. I can choose not to drink, I can't choose not to cycle.

(I'm probably not making the point I think I am)

A better comparison is that it is an offence to speed on a powered wheelchair or scooter.

I think I would be chuffed to bits to get caught speeding on the bike, I might even bribe a copper to do me. Just think of the street credit you would get for being caught doing 35 in 30 zone. The neighbours would be green, this would be far better than pretending you could afford a whole gallon of petrol and our jaffa of a son in law might even be shamed in to doing some exercise.
