On several bikes over the years ive owned i often wondered what the screw with a compression spring around it is for.Its on the brake levers so I can only assume its for bringing the lever closer to the handlebar.
Would I be correct with this assumption.

Yes. Its called the Reach Adjust screw. You might need to adjust the cable after making a brake lever reach adjustment.
