I don't think MP3's are crap, they serve a function of compressing audio. This was very important in the early days of computer based music for the masses due to the massive cost of storage space on hard disks and the low bandwidth of the net.
Before MP3 became popular I would use the .wav type file, which if I understand it correctly makes a duplicate of the CD (which is made up of digital data), but the file size is large compared to an MP3.
