Sorry, am I not allowed to reply in a similar vein?
It's how trouble starts, stuff escalates and before you know it you're square go.

It's funny but recently on the CS 3 I passed three pedestrians nearby of which one decided to yell at me suddenly as I passed..to startle me at a guess...Normally I would have just told them to fark off but on this particular occasion I decided to ignore it..I suppose it really generally depends on my mood and how tired I am.Went on my way and just wondered why people had to behave like complete ace holes.

Group of young lads on the A32

As always they get stuck in the traffic at Cams Hall

Pull alongside the driver and point out video cam, and that the video will be going to the Police as antisocial behaviour, asking for a Section 59

Was not impressed when it was explained that if his car was reported under section 59 more than once, then it was confiscation time for the car

Lots of apologies

Today I get beeped at while riding slowly up a hill: the road was quiet and wide, he could (and did) pass me no problem, still he had to beep me into the door zone.
He was obviously beeping at you in encouragement Pat!

I've had this many times when cycling slowly up hills, so many drivers obviously admire me.
Quite often I get a wave from them as well, at least I think they're waving...

Hadn't realised there was a forum filter that substuted "naughty" words and when I read the OP I thought @grellboy literally called the bloke in the 4x4 a "daffodil". Not a choice of insult that came readily to mind I thought, but I somehow accepted the resuling anger it caused.

On the continent, especially France, many drivers will give a beep just to let you know they are there and are going to pass. This goes for hgv's and buses as well.
