Ok so here's what really happened:

Hi again. Well as expected it turned into a piss up as opposed to a bike ride. Every pub we went passed was a magnet towards one of us , and was a case of " all for one ,.and one after another"
It started off nice and sensible with me meeting up with one of the guys as we headed another pint and then off to meet the rest. It was quite warm and he had this huge red sack on his bike as if he was going around the world delivering toys. His jacket was zipped up right to the adams apple as away we went. He was crawling along quite pissed so we decided I will go ahead to meet the others , just incase they thought we where not coming. Eventually the other guy caught up and after looking at his bike it was self evident as to why he was struggling. Both tyres were covered in sick , so I decided to clean them and give him some of my water, which made a big difference.
7 of us were now ready to go , and around 10 miles the 2nd pub was greeted by our bare arses. I had another pint of Guinness and was ready to go mental ,but the others were practically flat out. From that point on ,I knew where it was all going to end , so I stuck to ciders for the rest of the day. Fast forward ,4 pubs later most of them were well and truly rat-arsed, but thankfully they were within spewing distance from home. Me and the other guy though were 16 miles from home and I was a little concerned as to the state of him cycling that way. He got on his bike in the beer garden to head off home and immediately got arrested!! :-) So it was a squad car ride to the station for him and some gbh off his girlfriend for sure. As nice as the day was ,I was buggered to be cycling the 16 miles home by myself, No more pub stops or waiting for the slower ones of our group to catch up. I was also glad I kept off the spirits and only drank larger otherwise I would never of got home.
On balance (or lack thereof) though it was a good day out and we will no doubt be laughing all about it tomorrow when are still in bed on a dreary Monday :~)

Fair play to you organising it, even though it may not have turned out the way you wanted. You just never know, it might get one or two of those people interested enough to join you again and cycle a little further, with less beverages in between. I do 99% of cycling alone but last Monday I'd managed to get 3 others out for an evening spin. Route planning with elevations and distances etc gets complicated in a group especially when there's one gravel bike, a hybrid and 2 road bikes, with differing levels of ability for each rider!

Going out in a mixed bikes/ ability group can still be enjoyable.

Canal path is ideal , if you have one nearby.
10 mph , chunter along for an hour. Short break , then head back , and if required, the speed merchants can head off.

If that goes well, distance and speed can be worked on.
