Has this ever happened to anyone.

I just dropped my daughter of at school. And started to ride going down hill towards a roundabout when I heard a funny noise so I pulled over to investigate and found this.   Was not a very nice walk back home lugging the bike. Nearly gave some old gent a heart attack as well as the inner tube exploded half way back had to explain to him that we were not under attack.

its either worn due to braking, a cheap very low quality wheel or both.
Either way you are looking at a new rim/wheel.

was it a loud bang? I had my tyre explode the other day as I suspect I over inflated it, must have gone over the 120psi mark, at that preasure its a BIG bang, scared the carp out of me

I've not had anything as extreme but I had a rear rim failure a few months back. I had known it was worn (indicator had gone) but had forgotten about it . Topped it up to 85psi one night got on the bike the next morning and after about 5 minutes the resistance became immense (surely this hill is not that steep ), a massive bulge had developed in the rim. I unhooked the v brakes to release the resistance only to have it pop a few seconds later.

Yeah it was a bloody loud bang scared the crap out of me. The rim is totally gone I think it might have been air pressure I did pump up the tyre yesterday so I am thinking that was to blame.

Same sort of basic,I was pumping the tyre up and the rim went like that, although the wheel had been used for ten years.

"Deuxieme" bicycle rim gauge. £5 from eBay.

My Open Pros start off at about 1.7-1.9mm. After 10,000km they're down to 1.0mm. They'll get binned when they get close to 0.5mm.

I check them every time I change the tyre (about every 5000km).
