A day of messing about & I get to this state:
IMG_0520.JPG
The cables going to the wall mounted TV (well monitor in this case) is already looking messy. I could chase the cables into the wall but I'm not even sure if this is the setup I want (but this side of the room doesn't have any power cables chased in. Any suggestions for keeping the cables tidy, at least in the short term? I'm going to need 3x HDMI, 1x power & 1x optical S/PDIF absolute minimum.

yeah get some plastic conduit and just surface mount ,do NOT chase into wall and plaster over ,which is neater yes but its a potential problem for a few reasons (you want to move the units ,a wee prob with cables and u need to dig them out for a 2 quid cable !cant upgrade without a lot of work/ faffing around )
iv just done this with av stuff better than loose cables dangling

Plastic cable trunking like this
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/593243458/White_Decorative_Cable_Trunking.html?s=p

Comes in all shapes and sizes. Fix lengths of it to the wall with cut outs* where you want cables to enter or leave. The lid/cover comes off to put in additional cables or to take out old ones.
Corners and Tee pieces are available, just depends how "professional" a finished appearance you want to achieve.

*easily done with a mini hack saw.

Ideally completly hidden but until I get it all sorted out I'm not going near chasing.

My only problem with the white conduit is due to the cream white used & pastel greeny blue of this room it stands out like sore thumb . It's hard to see but look in the bottom left hand corner of the picture you can see some used for network cables (the cables on the floor are temp ones while I complete the room move I'll cut to length when I've finished the job)

Oh when chasing I tend to make a deep & wide conduit that terminates in an open double box. This way I can pull a cable through when need & can quickly blank off with a single plate. A lot more initial work but more useable end result.

Philex Aluminium Trunking. I believe that screwfix stocks it. Be careful there's Philex aluminium effect which is much cheaper. I'll be going down to my local SF store to take a proper look at it in person.

That is the reason why everyone like to use wireless gadgets and appliances, though we cannot deny that not all products are wireless especially if it need some electricity and power.

Wireless SUCKS! The amount of time I help friends with problematic wireless stuff to find that the frequency range of what ever they're using has about about 100 various signals (no exageration!) which is causing mayhem.
