I hate the fact OP tried Halfords in the 1st place. Halfords do for cycling what ****ed tramps do for society.

As we have previously discussed, Halfords are by far and away the most successful cycling retailer in the UK. So they are clearly doing something right. Whilst they may not meet your requirements, they supply a product that a very large number of people are very happy with.

^_^ i love my galaxy tab for its ease of use etc but typing is never so accurate on a touchscreen. I nearly always have to re-read everything before posting. New models tend....nee modelstend...its close, but not immediately obvious

I once went to a local plumbers' merchant, thinking I needed a new tap. After I explained the problem, he said:
"Nah, mate, you don't need no new tap. You want one of these."
He showed me a small rubber washer, and charged me 1p for it. (This was a few years ago, but 1p wasn't a lot of money in those days.)

....or they have the best marketing/PR

It is a universal that sometimes the most popular things in life are not necessarily the best

That's right. If you don't know much about bikes that's where you go. They get thousands of people into biking who wouldn't dream of setting foot inside a LBS for very good reasons (they are intimidating for most people) so in that respect they are fundamental to the successful expansion of cycling in the UK

I had a very good experience in "Go Outdoors" the other day. Was only after some brake blocks and cables ended up chatting to the guy in there for over half an hour he showed me his bike and how he'd got it set up and everything.
