Kids cycling to school

There is a caveat that applies when you park your car on the pavement. Do so and you are at risk of blocking the path forcing blind and disabled people into the road and, your car is liable to be scratched by pedestrians which includes in my book kids on bikes, scooters, disabled carts, shopping trolleys, toy tractors, go-carts (home-made or otherwise), groups of wondering neolithic schoolchildren, etc.

If the car's on the pavement - hard luck on its owner. If its in a towaway zone call for a truck.

Kids should ride trick bikes to school and be taught to ride up and over any cars parked on the pavement, even better if they have studded ice tyres in Winter.

Everyone on our street does it...two wheels on pavement... it's a busy road, and tight for space... I've lost 3 wing mirrors to passing traffic!! Thankfully pavements are quite wide, so doesn't cause a prob. Even traffic wardens (who are ticket-happy!) say it's OK, as I asked one.

OK. I just wondered whether the school were fobbing you off by saying there was no specific storage for bikes.
The bike stands at my daughter's school are uncovered, but bikes here tend to be designed (so far as they can be) with that in mind.

The ones at my youngests school are excellent, like a line of 4 garages but when you open the doors there are no seperating sidewalls. Inside the back wall is an entire row of solid stands and the doors themselves are also closed and padlocked during the day. I think there's space for about 50 bikes but I've never seen more than a dozen in there.
Still pleasant thing on Wednesday, the youngest rang after school to see if a friend could come round, then arrived home on his own. Said friend had gone home to drop off his bike and get a lift here from his Mum. They actually turned up about 10 minutes later with both of them on bikes. So I cycled him home later on along with my son, it all felt very natural.

My son mostly cycles on the road now, but certainly in the past there was one stretch of road that I didn't like him cycling on ... about 200 m long, road literally 2 car widths and bending, and heavily parked. Cars do get damaged along there - I've seen it myself - but to be honest they deserve it because they could park in safer places (quite a few of the residents have driveways so its not their cars - but people trying to avoid paying parking charges).
Now they park on the pavement so badly that you can't get through at times ... I do often report it to the police, and sometimes they do get ticketed. If my son had damaged any of those cars because they left so little space that he couldn't get through - I would say it was the car's fault for blocking the path. I don't think he ever did. I've even had to pushed my bike through the spaces occasionally and couldn't actually bring myself to hit their cars.
Another occasion someone parked on the pavement outside my house, as I was getting ready to go out. I overheard her say to her companion - how she had parked well. I pointed out politely that my son and I were just about to take out bikes out the gate - that I hoped she didn't mind a few scratches if we touched her car - the one she had left a 1ft gap. She looked, turned bright red, got back in the car and drove off!
Sorry its a topic that drives me insane... that they don't leave enough room for someone walking, let alone a child on a small bike or a wheelchair.

That's excellent news. A lot of money is going into that sort of thing here by the council. I have some mixed feelings about it as it drains a lot of funding for cycle parking out and into schools, I'll be very happy if it works in the long run though.

If they're on the pavement they are fair game.
I once had to squeeze past a chavved up Corsa parked wholly on the pavement on our road. Somehow i managed to bang into the wing mirror, somehow forcing it the wrong way and somehow snapping it off.
I think kids need to be taught a healthy disrespect for people that park on footpaths.

I really want to print some sticky labels that say "disabled space, blue badge holders only" and stick them on the windscreen of people parked in disabled spaces at supermarkets.
a friend of mine spent a night in the cells for riding over an un-marked police car as it was parked in a cycle lane (Trinity street, coventry)

Start badgering to get the parking space extended
It proves you were right.
(To incentivse the use of the facility a parking charge should be introduced. That is a charge to park your car outside the School to pick up your fat kid)
