Why are kids so damn big now? Some of the year 10s locally are well over 6', when I was at school no-one except Mark Smith was over 6' when we all left at 16
Food intake when young, and less serious illness!
I was very tall as a teenager - 6' 1". I stood at the back in assembly and looked over the heads of most of the rest of the school. There were only one or two other boys my height. These days, I often see younger men 3, 4, 5 or more inches taller than me. In the Netherlands, I would be just about average male height now!

My youngest, a girl, hit 5'3" at age ten, wears a size six to six-and-half shoe.

One nice thing about big kids is that it is far easier for me to find size 13 shoes for myself than it was when I was growing up...

I've got a girl who always had to wear older styles when growing up because she had to wear the bigger sizes when it came to shoes, and my other two are probably on the shorter side, my year 8 is still shorter than me and wearing trousers for younger children (recently removed the age 10 stuff!), though one of his friends is 5 ft 11! However I think he may have started the growth sprint phase so I refused to buy new school shoes for the last 4 weeks of term and I've sent him in wearing some black trainers that look a bit school shoe like (so far we have got away with it).

Rather than bury him under the patio, you could let him have that bike, and go and buy yourself a new one.

You didn't fall into the trap of feeding them good nutritious food when they were young, did you? Well, you've only yourself to blame if the thankless little blighters grow up big and strong.

As a related ponder, I've noticed that if I try on a 'medium' at Primark it's too small for me, but a 'large' Hugo Boss fits me like a well-ventilated tent. Took me a while to cotton on (I'm slow that way) - it's cos rich people tend to be bigger. Generations of good food, easy living and not too much physical strain tend to manifest themselves in tall, strong and well-proportioned bodies. Funny that. (In another related ponder, don't I remember reading somewhere that Japanese people these days are taller than their pre-war forebears by some astonishing average - 6" or something. In a word: protein.)

I was one of the tallest in my class at school, and have always considered myself reasonably tall. However, I work near a University, and so sometimes find myself walking along near a group and feeling like I must be walking in a ditch. It's un-nerving to be the shortest in a group when you are used to being one of the tallest.

I presume it's diet, but kids are definitely getting taller. The height predictor chart suggests my daughter will be taller than me in 13 years.

Hard to draw any conclusions from that. Sizing varies radically from brand to brand, even product line to product line.

Yes, perhaps in the view of that one particular company, but I was talking about brand to brand variation. And when it comes to footwear British sizes are always greater than American ones. A British 12 is an American 13 or even 14 in some lines.

My own brother is 7 years younger than me but 2 inches taller. Since he moved to the USA though he has grown massive and is probably now double my weight.

Numbered sizing is generally different because of the different measuring systems rather than nationality average sizes.
What I don't understand is that it says (for example) UK/EUR - M USA - S so it isn't like they're flattering Americans, all the information is there. It's more of an insult really, singling out a country and saying 'obviously Europe considers this a medium size, but it's small to you, fatty'
