Today I was out on the roadie and suddenly heard the plop of an air rifle at the same time as the pellet hit my thigh. It didn't actually do any harm but if it had been the eye instead of the leg it may well have been nasty. I turned around and the three kids ran into their house. I went to the house and shouted loudly at the open door until eventually a man (possibly the father) came to the door. His English was as good as my Vietnamese but with sign language he got the message and seemed suitably upset so I then went on my way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely inform the police as they take any kind of fire arm incident very seriously. They will also probably ultimately confiscate the rifle so the bastards can't shoot someone in the eye.

My neighbour at the back had an air rifle and a target set on the back fence. I used to hear the crack as he fired it but thought nothing of it until one day I was in the garden and a pellet hit the back window. Must have missed my head by inches. I just called the police straight away. I saw them parked outside his house a couple of hours later. I don't know what he was thinking of. The fence was only a cheap one with slat pannels with lots of holes, and his garden was probably only 30 feet long.

I often used to go with a mate to visit his grandmother when I was a teenager. She had a huge back garden and we used to put bottles at the far end and blast away at them with his .22 air rifle. It amazed me how much damage a little lead pellet could do to a heavy-duty bottle at that range! There'd be big pieces of glass spread over a wide area by the time we'd finished. I certainly wouldn't fancy being shot with one of those things!

Its not really the calibre that does the damage its the range and the power of the weapon, I would prefer to be hit by a lower powered .22 than a higher powered .177, these things can and have been lethal, I have a rather nice .177 and it can do some damage, its just below being classed as a firearm, remember these weapons can be easily pepped up, there are many that are several times more powerful than they are meant to be, regardless of the power of the weapon, aiming and shooting it at someone is a very serious offence, one you can go to jail for.

I had some kids pop one at me near the airport, it was a bit half hearted but still it peed me off suffieciently to grab my mobile a hundred yards or so away and make a right big deal about it to the Police, I just said a gun had been aimed and shot at me, I thought it may be a rifle of some sort, give the Police their due, about 8 minutes and they were there, lit up, I went on my way considering it a job well done.

I think I had another one a while back but couldnt be sure, something pinged but it may have been a stone hitting me.

Nice being a target for other peoples "Fun".

Wow, Keith! You're lucky! They probably just had a cheap one. I have one that is FOR REAL. It's a small game hunting weapon, and I've killed lots of rabbits and squirrels with it. Those pointed lead pellets go DEEP! It has no problem penetrating a sheet of 1/2" plywood. No one should ever think of an air rifle as a toy.

Aye, should be banned.

As an aside, thought i'd been shot with one last summer, something hit my helmet then was a stinging pain. Got home and turned out a wasp had hit the helmet and gone into the slat and set about stinging me.
