Does one need an anti virus on the above. I get mixed reports on it so don't really know what to do. If it is needed, what is the best free one?

Barnet,
I bought my daughter one for Christmas, I'll ask her when she gets home from work. She does love it though.

My MiL is 87 and took to this like a duck to water... except we have to keep her off the internet unless supervised as she is far too trusting

A little off topic but I got the Fire HD last year, more or less as soon as it came out, and find it awful. We have a family iPad and the Fire isnt even in the same ball park when it comes to ease of use. It has become a large, expensive, colour screen ereader for me.

I think it would totally wrong to compare the kindle fire to an ipad. The kindle is predominantly an e - reader. I have no idea why people would buy it as an ipad alternative. ....the fact that you can get a kindle for just over £100 compared to an ipad at what £300-£400....
So why would it be in the same ball park ...?
I bought the Mrs a kindle for Xmas and she's read 11 books already.....totally addicted !
Don't get me wrong she's put a couple of apps on there but at the end of the day it's a digital book isn't it ????

'er indores got one for Christmas and is delighted with it. So long as you don't ask too much of it - she wants to read, check emails, do a bit of basic browsing and play a couple of silly little mind games - it's great. For £100 (special offer deal) it's a steal.

im a little tea pot
my wife loves hers, plays games, reads and we even hook it up via micro HDMI to run netlix on our main lounge TV. i even have a few games on there.

not sure about the AV side though, any decent Android based AV software should be fine as long as you getthe .APK file and a file browser to then load it from.

In terms of tablets it's obvious that an ipad or even an android tablet is superior and if I was looking for a tablet I would certainly buy an ipad probably.
But for £100, the kindle is fantastic and does everything you want it to do for that sort of price. The screen is an awesome display and battery life is cracking. Highly recommend one to anyone who reads a lot of books. The wife was a bit worried at first as she has always liked the feel of a proper book but she has since downloaded many free or cheap books that have kept her quiet.....For once ;)

If it was only aimed at being a digital book reader then the Fire HD wouldnt even exist as Amazon would have stuck with the original Kindle. It has been sold as a tablet first and foremost, with the added benefit of also being a Kindle. So I think to mention it in the same sentence as an iPad is fair. The fact that I have both also makes the comparison valid.
If it was aimed at being an e-reader it wouldnt have a 'shiny' screen which struggles in direct sunlight as most tablets do.

I find the browser poor and the alternatives not much better. I find the Amazon restrictions restricting. And I find it slow and buggy.

But as a night time e-reader its perfect. This is my third Kindle, original keyboard, new one without keyboard and then the Fire. The Fire is by far the worst purchase of the 3.

I bought both my daughters Nooks for Christmas predominantly because they can download books from the library for them.

Granted it's more than an e - reader now I suppose. We haven't downloaded many apps to find out what it actually has or really looked into what the kindle can actually do itself. When purchased, it was recommended as an e - reader with added extras. Email, social networking sites etc......probably just the basic stuff. It's no where near the price range of a new ipad so I personally couldn't put it in the same ball park.

If you are buying books off trusted sources, there are hardly any chances of you coming across a virus,on the other hand,if you are not....
