Yep been there. Even in the seventies it was fifty years behind the times.

I found the video while researching the family tree, some of my mothers ancestors lived there for a while, apparently it was a boom town then.

I found the video while researching the family tree, some of my mothers ancestors lived there for a while, apparently it was a boom town then.

It was at the height of iron stone mining. There's local becks with their beds a rusty brown colour from the iron rich rocks. It's a grim place with a shallow gene pool.

"Hull has its own sudden elegancies. People are slow to leave it, quick to return. And there are others who come, as they think, for a year or two, and stay a lifetime, sensing that they have found a city that is in the world yet sufficiently on the edge of it to have a different resonance."

Sadly as someone noted today on the 'lercal' radio, Hull / the people never recovered from* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hull_Blitz ** a sentiment I agree with
(... Hull was the most severely damaged British city or town apart from London during the Second World War, with 86,715 buildings damaged and 95 per cent of houses damaged or destroyed ...) : (the house I was raised in for the first 3 years of my life was 'slum cleared' so many years ago ....)

  1. this with useless (no vision for education, infrastructure, transport, culture, economic regeneration, etc. ) local city council over the years,
  2. a housing / slum** clearance that caused as many problems as it solved
  3. the decline of it's traditional seafaring industry with very little to fill the financial / employment void
  4. years of general under achievement on far too many levels

I still love the place, even though I live on the 'outskirts' nowadays, I still work there, support my 'lercal team' (football) regardless of division or 'owner' , & defend it from those whose prejudice clouds their judgement, whilst acknowledging it's failings - Sorry Maz

I feel immensely proud of the successful bid & hope it turns around an undeserved reputation & helps the healing process of '70 years of hurt'**

I live near Kingston Upon Hull, and find the people to be some of the most friendly in the UK. Go out for a night in old town and you'll have a cracking time. From experience I find the locals a bit.........boorish...but beneath the coarse veneer is a welcoming and friendly demeanour. There is an element of 'you'e not from round here. are you?' but no more than any large town/city. It's is also a city torn asunder three ways - you either like the red and white of the 'East', the black and white of the 'West', or the black and gold of the'Targers' (Tigers but pronounced with an 'ahh'). Best stick to a neutral subject like beer or music or cycling, or John Prescott......

Me the wife and children got the train to Hull in 2008 for the Tour of Britain, Bradly Wiggins had just started road racing after winning so much on track at the worlds at Manchester 2005/6? and then the Olympics in Beijing, also Gerant Thomas. strange as thre wasnt really that many spectators for a major event compared to the Tour of Britain of today. We then went onto the SeaLife centre for the children that was pretty impressive and the whole family had a great day out, thats the only time Ive ever been.

Hull reminded me of most small UK northern towns/citys, poor in general due to lack of work, just go to any, they're all the same, Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington, Rochdale. I was reading up on Derrys winning the City of Culture and what it has done for them, 'not much', the money on these small city's should be spent and job enterprises in my opinion though I think it worked on Liverpool getting the City of Culture in 2008 for what was a desperate and much needed renovation for such a large city.

Liverpool looks fantastic compared to pre City of Culture 2008, lets hope it works for Hull as I dont really think its worked for Derry though something being regenerated than nothing, is better than nothing I suppose
