Knocked Off (Deptford) - Can I do anything ?

it's the practice of restoring old threads. this thread started on the 22 Dec and ended on the 24th. Classic33 revived it by posting to it yesterday.

personally, I don't think two weeks is long enough to call this thread mining (especially over holiday season). two months maybe

Not the intention when posting on this one. Iv'e been down this route, so I responded with what I had done.
Who knows maybe it may even help someone else.

Indeed, this thread should be bounced to the top again from time to time, and it's only a matter of time before the half blind taxi driver takes out another cyclist.

At which point he may not be as lucky as I was and his lawyer may just stumble across this thread when working out if anyone knew that a half blind, over age person was calling himself a taxi driver and driving an uninsured vehicle on a hire and reward basis.

At least we can say the Metropolitan Police were, and so far have done nothing with the information.

Just an update on this one, seeing the ongoing similar story with (PC) Cubist and daughter.

Today I got a 2nd letter from the Met.

In summary it says that having considered instituting court proceedings against the driver for for driving without due care and attention, it has been decided that there is insufficient evidence to present a realistic prospect of a conviction
However they will keep this on file for the next 6 months in case they catch him again

I'm speechless.

They have all the details, they have a handful of witnesses and if they had actually bothered to arrive at the incident (it was 7pm on a Friday night, maybe shift change time or something) they could have probably got him for a lot more.

I'm afraid the lesson today, from the Police, is take the law into your own hands.

On the basis that they don't give a damn and/or have the manpower to deal with what turned out through shear luck to have been a minor incident, I would assume they would deal with ensuing major incident in the same cavalier attitude.

I'm sorry to say that next installment of this incident will be when this dangerous driver hits the next cyclist. They may not be so lucky.

This driver needs to got off the road, and got off fast. I just hope that the poor Copper who has to explain why the man was still driving to the cyclists family gets to read this thread first. However given his history it is liable to be another hit and run so good chance he won't be caught.

As with anyone else where you don't get the service you expect, complain. Be as vocal as you can be. I know you shouldn't have to do it, but do it anyway.

I got knocked off my scooter by a speeding car that slowed and then drove off leaving a large piece of body work behind, I had two sold witnesses that got the reg, and model and a description of the driver, police attended

they wrote a letter to the registered owner who failed to respond, they asked me if I want them to pursue it, I said yes, they dropped it anyway

in short, they can't be bothered if there's no injury or 'serious' crime involved

Take the letter, and all the evidence you have to the station and ask to speak with the Inspector. I suspect that they have looked at the case and decided that as the number you and the witness provided them with came back as no trace, then they won't be able to trace the driver. However, now that you have a number which DOES come back to a citroen, they will be able to investigate it more thoroughly. I can't promise anything will change, but it's worth a try. I suspect also that there is a CPS style "not in the public interest" decision-making process which has kicked in because you weren't injured.

You may not end up with a prosecution, but you are entitled to a proper and detailed explanation. Be explicit, and ask to be told why no offences are being considered. Without wanting to offend you or lead this thread down the wrong route, remember that the officer you speak with at the station will NOT have investigated the allegations you made, nor will they have made the decision not to prosecute. If you go in all guns blazing they MAY just retreat behind the shield of "The decision's been made" and will be less likely to "go the extra mile".

Bit of a soundbite from me here, but isn't it almost laughable that policing the roads these days means putting up speed cameras but not actually pursuing reckless drivers?

Anyway, all respect for you to keeping doggedly at this, only way to make a difference.
