Cycling along Widmore Road Bromley. Rain was heavy, traffic was heavy. I was doing no more then about 10mph due to the slow moving traffic then suddenly a car turned left in front of me. I braked but couldn't avoid him and went straight into his near side and on to the bonnet.

Driver stopped and got out to help me up. He admitted total responsibility. Gave me all his contact and insurance details. And fair play to the bloke he was very concerned that myself and my bike was alright. I pointed out that his car suffered a couple of dents but he was more concerned about me then his car. Told me he is a cyclist and should have been more aware. After taking his details I said I would be alright, but he insisted he stay with me until I was sure I was OK to continue. He even helped me righten the wheel/handlebars.

The hit knocked the front wheel out of alignment and knocked the sti and gears out. Took the bike straight to the LBS for them to have a look over.
Just had a call back, front wheel not that bad and they have managed to true it. They sorted out the sti and the gears. Apart from that the bike escaped relatively unscathed, no scratch marks or dents. If I was going any faster it could/would have been a lot worse.

The lbs have charged me £24 for the work and giving the bike a thorough once over, so seeing as the driver admitted responsibility, was very apologetic and caring for my welfare, I have let the bloke off...he was just as shocked as I was at the end of the day and left him with a couple of nice dents in his car.

I just called him up to let him know that I am fine and that there was little damage to the bike. He offered to drive to my home or work and pay but I said no worries about it.

Feel a little knocked up where I hit the bonnet, my ribs (again) right side and my hip bone. But nowhere near as badly hurt as my last accident.

So a nice start to a monday morning....

He done the right thing by playing by the book, giving me his details, number, insurance etc, offering to drive out of his way to pay and for being a little bit more caring then the usual run of the mill driver.

Glad you are not badly hurt, I'd have still let the guy pay, if only so that he feels that he's done the right thing.

Glad you're okay! Though it is terrible that it happened, it is nice to hear about the guy's attitude!

With the three car pile I witnessed a few months ago the driver who was 100% at fault got out of her car and, rather than apologise, started to try and pass the blame. With my Dad's motorbike accident the person lied a little to their insurers which just held up the claim...and when someone went in the back of me they squabbled over the £50 to have the car checked over, bumper refitted and a few bulbs replaced. It is pathetic!

Respect for the guy for doing the right thing!

I'd of probably asked him for the money, but I can see why you let him off!

Unlucky - but safe. Good attitude Ian...'WE' are road users.

great to hear there are some otehr people out there who accept that now and then there are accidents that are just that, accidental, and don't go down the 'must sue for everything i can get' road.

i got taken off at a mini-roundabout a few years ago, slid across the bonnet and hit the deck. had a small scrape here and there, and the lady paid for my bike to have a service, about £75. i never once thought about 'suing' for personal injury. i've had worse falling out of tress when i was a kid!

that driver will always check on his left from now on.

Sorry to hear the news Ian, but glad you are more or less OK. Seems like a genuine driver, so not taking anything from him was a nice thing to do in the circumstances.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your fall Ian. I hope the aches and pains disappear soon. Really nice of you to let the driver off and it's also nice that the driver's genuine kindess and concern was also rewarded by you in the process.

+1 to all that. Attitude wins again.

Hope there's nothing unseen and you aren't too stiff in the morning.
