Here for rides.
I was 100% plebian on a no experience of opera basis, and absolutely sure I hated opera even though I'd never been, before the lovely Helen cut a deal, Opera at Covent Garden, at a dress rehearsal so dirt cheap, followed by the London Transport Museum.

Hated it. Then Otello and the chorus turned to face the audience and sang Esultate! L’orgoglio musulmano sepolto è in mar and the sheer power of their singing had me hooked.

In a somewhat distresing development Mrs AFO and i are making an effort to spend more time together.

So we have been on walks,
eaten out together (for no other reason than the pleasure of each others company!)
We're off to see Paloma Faith
etc etc

So we discover that Opera North are doing La Boheme in leeds. 'Should we go?' enquires Mrs AFO. I was completely stumped. Dont know if we should go, dony know if i want to go. Dont know anything about opera, doubt if i know anyone who has been to one.

Whilst i appreciate its not life and death i would welcome your vews.

[/I][/I]Andy-in-Sig go to the London Coliseum and watch and listen to the ENO, sung in English with surtitles for the dull of hearing. You may revise your opinion.
Never really got the point of opera...then went to see La Boheme at the Coliseum, brilliant for an opera newbie. So, I'd vote yes, but probably wouldn't worry too much where I was sitting.

Someone was daft enough to leave their mobile switched on - when it rang they were almost lynched ;)

Incidental info - the ENO do loads and loads of fantastic outreach work in schools and the community.

Well thanks for your advice everyone. I have just got back from La Boheme. We got the cheap seats a tenner each and it was the bargain of the century. Awesome. Great singing, wonderful orchestra, nice choccy ice cream at half time. I'm a convert!

  Congratulations!
Now try La Traviata ;) ... I cried  (luckily it was dark)
The music is something else (despite wanting to knock some of the characters' heads together and telling them that they were behaving stupidly, by today's standards at least )

I said go buy get the cheap tickets so if you had hated it, it wouldn't have been too much of a loss. But you loved it anyway. Good chap!

I have been to several Operas in my time and really like them! That said, the ones at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow have a screen at the top with the translation, so you get a better idea of what's going on, complete with all the little jokes, etc.

One of the most interesting experiences I had was when we were in Verona. We went to see an Opera in the Amphitheatre (they have Opera there in the evenings. They sell candles for you to hold during the performance and the famous pictures of the place are of a performance, such as Aida taking place complete with an audience comprising of nothing but tiny flames flickering in the dark, adding to the atmosphere.
See the main picture: http://www.arena.it/).

It was The Force of Destiny by Verdi that we saw, and at around midnight, after a few pauses, they eventually had to stop the performance because of the rain!! (the Orchestra wasn't very happy you see - all that rain affecting their instruments).

We were round the side so we could actually see behind the stage as well, which was quite interesting to watch.

If you are ever in Verona, I'd certainly recommend it!

What kind of half-arsed report is that? Did the sex live up to expectations...?
