What's your view?

I like that it's a pre-planned route, easy ferry access to the start (Caen) and easy access from La Rochelle at the end. I'm thinking of doing it and then cycling back to Caen along the west coast of Brittany using the Velodyssee route.

I've ridden a bit of it... Caen to Ouistreham, and back. That bit was enjoyable. Not much use am I?

Thanks. For me, this year, getting to/from a starting point has to be cheap and convenient. Living close(ish) to Portsmouth means Caen is perfect.

I reckon I'm going to cycle down to La Rochelle using it (La velo francette).

I may even cycle back to Caen via the west coast http://www.velodyssey.com.

I'm also tempted to cycle from La Rochelle to Santander and get the ferry back to Portsmouth from there.

You might want to look at the (very long) thread for last year's (not the) Fridays' tour from Caen to Bordeaux. We probably used some of the velo francette route.

My observations of pre-planned routes, even in France, are that navigation is much more difficult than you think it should be, and that even if there are some really good bits of the route there are some which have been designed to suit the local authority rather than the cyclists who might use them. I'd much rather prepare my own route, based on someone else's.

Completely hors sujet, but vélo is masculine and adjectives agree with the noun. French is a funny language - there's a hidden feminine noun in there - la randonnée francette de vélo or even la route francette de vélo. They do it pour discombobuler les autres.

Agreed, I think the "la" in this case is reference to "la route" itself, which is feminine.

A pedant speaks. Francette is not a word in my French dictionaries. What is is found is franquette which is only found in "A la bonne franquette" which means simply or as you please. Presumably what is meant is "véloroute à la bonne franquette" cycletouring as you please. Looking at the website it is an obvious pun. France -> franquette. It is common for cycle rides to use the feminine. Route or randonée is implied as in "La Pierre le Bigaut"
