My experience of Madrid, which I must admit is very small and old, is that the restaurants are not open or are deserted at 8pm. Everything seems to come to life much later.

Looks like I lucked out by not watching it, instead choosing hanging around in the pouring rain and then spending an hour and a bit on an overcrowded train sitting on an uncomfortable flip down seat right next to the toilet door.
