Victor is out ☹️

Unfortunately, Victor Campenaerts will not start stage 16 of La Vuelta today after falling ill. Following consultation with the medical team, it was decided that he is not fit to race.

Victor Campenaerts: “I am very disappointed not to be able to help Jonas bring the red jersey to Madrid. Before I fell ill, I was feeling really good and was able to do my job for the team. I’ll be cheering for Jonas and the guys from home.”

He’d already done three weeks work in the first two.

We have a 17 man break which includes Bernal, Landa and UAE’s lottery winner of the day, Soler.

Soler is probably favourite from the break. UAE are in desperate need of a win after a long drought of one stage.

Bernal active again, I wonder if he had illness for a few days or whether he just can't compete at the highest level on the big mountain stages these days. If the latter then maybe he needs to rethink and focus more on one day races or shorter stage races.

Very good new for anyone that really doesn't like Vingegaard.... Aside from being a ridiculously good rider that can cope with most terrains, he was Jonas's "bodyguard" and rode the same sized bike. It was Campenaerts wheel that Jonas would sit on in the bunch. Good laugh in the team bus and gave good social media as well.
