I assumed it was because, as the '24 winner, he was the most recent winner present. In his absence (if this thinking was right) it would have gone to Kuss as '23 winner. In the absence of Roglic, Kuss and Remco the next available non-retired winner would have been Nairo (2016), and he's not riding. So my cunning logic would fail.

Actually, if he went home he's in contravention of Article 2.2.010 of the UCI rules which require all riders to use the hotel accommodation supplied by the race. At some point I think Sky had plans tow accommodation around France.

I've remembered now, Team Sky took a massive motorhome to the Giro in 2015 that would have made Sturgeon blush for their leader to sleep in. It was known as the 'Porte cabin'.

It makes sense and may be their reasoning, but I doubt there's a rule. Either way, it's better than last year's winner's teammate getting it.

I think sometimes in the past number 1 wasn't allocated, but I forget when.
