Apparently Hayter is out of contract. A win yesterday could have literally saved his career. While the Pog juggernaut rolls on, it is not without some effect in its wake.

Alternative reality 5 time tour winner, Jonas, would like a word.
I think the world tour is well enough aware of Hayter's qualities without discounting them due to a dominant Slovenian. I've come to the conclusion that the reason he's so good at TTs is that it's not possible for him to flaneuer around at the back of the peloton in that discipline.
Hope he gets a decent move, although in previous seasons I'd have tipped him to join up with Picnic and either renew himself or disappear into obscurity.

Coming second to Pog by fractions of a second is effectively the same as winning. He won’t miss out on a contract due to being beaten by Pog. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t already have something lined up anyway.
Pog skews the balance. Look how Remco has had to adapt to become better in GTs and Jonas who in another world would be 5x winner is just another contender. I was going to say eternal second but he doesn't ride in many races. Hayter prob like Wiggins was before he set off on the GT attempt. A good rider who could win TTs for Cofidis or whatever team they are on.

You're aware he'd won Paris-Nice, Volta Ciclista a Catalunya and the Giro before he started the Tour this year? Pog will have to get to the third week of the Vuelta to have as many race days as Vingegaard already has this season

Ethan Hayter has made it into the break which has 2 minutes lead over the peloton.

There are six bonus seconds at the intermediate (quite late in the stage), and ten at the finish. Hayter is 9" ahead of Van Aert. With the intermediate Hayter only needs to finish in the bunch (assuming a bunch sprint) to take the red jersey.

Unfortunately the Vuelta is the poor relation of the Grand Tours. There usually isn’t full live coverage of all stages, just a handful of the main mountain stages.
So, for once I can’t blame TNT, but the Spanish host broadcaster. They won’t cough up sufficient funds. If coverage were available, you can bet TNT would have it on your screen.

He’s like a pro version of those 2nd cats that pick up loads of early season wins then stop 1 point short of a 1st cat licence to avoid having to race the big boys 😉
