I think the last GT withdrawal while leading was Remco at the 2023 Giro. I'd guess it happens maybe three or four times a decade - nit that unusual.

I was pleased Cofidis got a stage. Not sure why, I just have a fondness for lost causes I suppose.
Re Pog, as well as skill and talent he has had a lot of luck - or more specifically an absence of bad luck. I've not seen it but it sounds like today was purely that: bad luck.

Pog has been diagnosed with a concussion, a displaced fracture of his left collarbone and a stable C7 cervical fracture. Will need surgery but that's being delayed due to the concussion

Ah, I see your point. But the distinctions become a bit blurred when you remember that Tony Martin didn't abandon mid stage, and nor did Rolf Sørensen. Pascal Simon abandoned mid-stage, but due to an injury suffered several days earlier.
The most famous instance of a leader crashing and being unable to get up must be Luis Ocaña, and I'm struggling to remember another.
