Lack of amateur rides to participate in

There's always loads of running events all over the place, 5m, 10km, 10m, half-marathon, 20m, marathons etc which you can go and participate in, most can be done by just paying on the day.

am i being a mong (more than usual!) or is there a lack of organised amateur rides around the country? i'd like to go and do an organised 50-miler event or so round the Bristol area for example rather than just doing it on my own every weekend but I never read or hear of anything like this going on?

apart from a few (read, loads) brain cells, what am i missing?

Your local CTC group may do organised rides. Then there's Audax UK.. then your local cycling clubs may do organised events that aren't races but more sociable. There is an awful lot out there, you just have to know where to look.

There are sportives. I did my first a few weeks ago and it was great. I did the novice route of 60k but there were 100k and 100 miles options as well. There was no time limit.

Sounds like you have the time to ride out with your local club on a regular basis e.g. every Sunday for 2 .. 3 ... 4 ... hours .. so if you havent yet joined one...

i'm thinking more along the lines of an event where you can ride, get a medal or t-shirt etc rather than just a social ride with a club. i think something like HelenD123 says 60-100km Sportives might be the answer. Is there a link to Sportive events so I can try find something round my area?

You could try organising a 'local' ride yourself, (CC and informal Rides, Clubs, and Events) because of this I have not only met many lovely people from this forum, but probaly every month (or so) had a social ride with others apart from my MP3!

Admitedly I've been a bit lazy in ahem 'organising' though did manage to prompt forum users on the sportive Helen mentioned & next month I've sort of 'prompted' a 'an exciting meet up for the ToB',

I don't do the maps thing though...

Go on give it a try

i think the audax uk events are way too far for me, but thanks!

thanks too, wc, did a search on bristol ctc and found this:

http://www.ctcwest.org.uk/bristol/ which has stuff on the rides list on the left menus. ta!

Nonsense, seek out a 100km (62 mile) event. If you can do 50 miles then you can do 100km

I have done 2 and looking to do my third towards the end of the year (Nov). Its not a race, its a bike ride with stops for cake!!!

I did do my first 100km ride two weeks ago so I'm quite happy to do that. (I regularly do 75-80km) They just seemed to be aimed at the 150-200km range which is too far, at least for now.
