I want to build up my cycling aiming for say 30 miles with a pub stop! Have a Marin mountain bike, too heavy for road work. I was looking at a Raleigh Pioneer, but after reading the comments - what about a Strawberry Hill Whyte bike? I've just found my cycling mojo!

I doubt if the Strawberry Hill at 12.6 kilos (28lbs) is much lighter than your Marin mountain bike which probably weighs around 14-15 kilos (32lbs). If you fitted slick road tyres like Continental Gatorskins to your Marin you would probably find it a lot easier to pedal on tarmac than it is on the knobbly off road tyres it came with. It wouldn't make it any easier to carry, of course, but you'd save a bundle of money.

According to Halfords, Raleigh Pioneer are 19kg. So you dodged a bullet there.

Can I suggest you hop onto your bathroom scales with and without the bike, so you know if the bike you are looking at is actually lighter.

+1 to @Shortmember suggestion. Slicks on your current bike will improve things a lot. And should certainly take you up to 30 miles, and then you can make a more informed decision about your next bike.

Edit: Strawberry hill seems to be a nice bike, and I'm sure you could do 30 miles on it, but it's not really designed for that sort of riding. It's designed for city riding where you dress for the destination not the ride, with chain guards and a low cross bar so you can wear a skirt on it.

That's a lightbulb moment, brilliant idea, will look into changing the tyres. Then I can build up the miles and get a better feel for my next step. Much appreciated, thanks!

Keep Calm and OMG.......CAKES!!
A friend of mine has a Raleigh Pioneer.
I watch her dragging it out of the shed and I think to myself my God that looks heavy - saying that though she loves it and wouldn't want anything else
