@hepburn - bringing the thread hijack to some sort of relativity - I've found the willingness of 4 of my local LBS' in helping to be entirely proportional to the kindness and respect shown by the customer, and I fear that may be where some people fall short.

In fact, Ive had 2 of them recommend online retailers for services they cant provide and offer discounts to make up the difference where possible.

This is a shame. My current bike is a Specialized Vita (Flat bar road bike) and I have been really happy with it but just feel I need to make the next step up. I'm a bit concerned with paying for the name with Specialized. But I guess that could be the case with a number of makes...

It's especially the case with specialized imo but don't discount if they fit

They do have 20% off at the mo, of happy with tiagra rather than 105, then this is in budget. There's a disc brake version (should stop better, although the mechanical tektro spyres aren't the best and they'll be heavier) for £80 more

I'm guess at under 5'3 you'll want a 48cm frame

Well I have had a rather varied weekend trying to try out bikes. Under the pretence of visiting the olympic park with my daughter I managed to go into Cycle Surgery. The man I eventually managed to attract the attention of said a 51cm would be ok for me (?????). I showed him a shortlist of bikes that I had got together and he said he could get them in for me to try which was a start but I doubt it would be much help if he was ordering in the wrong size.

We then tried the local bike shop and it was even harder to get served! They had 5 ladies bikes all under £500 so really not what I was interested in although we did manage to ascertain that a 48 would be best for me.

Yesterday we went into Evans and the young girl was absolutely brilliant. I sat on a couple of bikes just to gauge the size. We tested how the drops felt, if my arms felt too locked out, if I could reach the brakes easily, how the pedals felt etc She really took the time and obviously knew what she was talking about. Unfortunately they didn't have anything I liked enough in my size (I've decided against disc brakes now). I really wanted to give her my custom as she was so nice and didn't make me feel stupid. So it's back to the drawing board again. I feel I've really learnt a lot this past week and I'm still enjoying my search.

Watch this space.....

If you can get back into London, try to get to the massive giant store near St. Paul's. Not seen so many ladies bikes in one place. I'm sure they'd have one of the avail models in the right size, probably an XS in a giant

Evans will order bikes in for an, I think, £60 refundable deposit, with no obligation and they'll let you have a proper test ride too

Perhaps try to get up to the Bromley area and check out some of the shops Ian recommended
