On my ride today I slowed down for a short while to get my legs back, and I was passed by 2 ladies on bikes. First off, I have no issues with being passed, I'm not quick and I'm cycling for fun and health so makes no odds to me if the head down bum up brigade roar past.
Anyway, said ladies were wearing cycling clothing, lycra shorts and so forth, so I felt somewhat obliged to ease off and maintain a respectable distance.

Bottom line, is there any etiquette in such situations? Or should I have followed closely?

Catching them and sitting on just makes you a bit of a knob, unless invited to.

Male/female/mixed group is irrelevant.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
There is really no reason to treat women cyclists any differently to male cyclists. Treat women cyclist's as equals. However, if a female cyclist appears to be nervous of having you behind them, you have a choice. Either drop back, overtake them, or just cycle along side them, smile and maybe say hi.

a nervous female cyclist will probably prefer you to be in front of her rather than behind her. Its a judgement call, and which one you choose depends on the circumstances.

What would you do if male cyclists overtook you? Its the same with female cyclists. :okay:

No sit as close as possible and drool excessively whilst breathing really heavily. Then when you finally stop come out with as many double - entendres as you can possibly manage and marry that with mimicing Jim Dale from the Carry On films saying things like "phwoar".

Or you could actually just treat them like cyclists and people.... and sit where you normally would when behind any other cyclist.

A couple of young women caught me in the final km on a sportive today. They were going well and i managed to get on their wheels. It certainly was a nice respite to have a wheel to follow as I was suffering. Would have done the same if it was two guys.

I said hello, but the pair were having a good chat so that precluded continued chatting, dropping back seemed the best option. I'd be tempted to hop on the wheel of a male cyclist if they were running at my normal pace, if they're too quick I just let them go..
