The way she kept looking over her shoulder at me made it obvious she was a bit nervous, even me crossing over the road didn't help.

Shame really when someone has to feel like that.

Recommendation by (some) women's groups is never to walk behind a lone female, cross the road and walk on the other side
Why don't they cross if they're worried? Then if the follower crosses, there's more likely something to worry about.

I don't really understand why this seems often considered a women's issue in general. Some men don't like being followed either.

I was closely followed through a darkened wood for about 2 miles. Two miles uphill with him breathing heavily closely behind was spooky. All thoughts go through your mind but i thought if i stop he could be a right headcase. So i peddled like billyo then saw him off on the downhill, but he caught me up at the lights. I liked that, shall we do it again sometime he said Very spooky! Needless to say i politely declined the invite.

I get nervous with male cyclists behind me, as I (mostly correctly ) assume I'm slower, they want to pass me ... will they close pass me, or, my pet hate, undertake me?
Of course, if they change direction, like you did, I'm not nervous anymore ^_^

Or run into the back of you when you slow to let a bus out, as happened to me once in Manchester.

No Pat, what I was talking about was when I was walking home from the pub one night and there was a young girl in front of me.

You could tell she wasn't comfortable with me behind her.

@welsh dragon - Don't even think about it.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

They passed you, if they dont like being followed they shouldn't have passed you.
you are out cycling and were there first, just go at whatever speed you want.
if they want to be treated equally they shouldnt expect you to even be thinking about how close or how heavy you are breathing.

Don't even think about it just ride your bike.

Follow behind while making noises like you're eating the best plate of spaghetti you've ever had while slapping pretend bugs off your thighs and occasionally howl like a wolf on a dark night. Oh no wait, thats only if you're on the am commute near me....

If you slowed to a speed that was considerably less than your usual pace then it should be no problem getting back up to speed and goin past them. If they were travelling at a speed silimar to your typical pace then I don't understand how you would have caught them up unless trying to?

I'm generally not bothered ... but just occasionally (usually when its fairly isolated and getting darker), I will feel uncomfortable, especially if they sit on my back wheel for a mile or two when I think they could easily overtake. Similarly I'm less likely to stop and offer help to a man in an isolated place where I don't think there are going to be many people passing, depends on how he looks.
