Now 137 miles behind. Tough as virtual Mark keeps going whilst she sleeps.

But a target, and that's invaluable - much easier to draft than lead, of course.

"The heatwave will continue in Europe for the next week— traveling my route’s trajectory.
I’ve been nauseous every day and finally threw up in the first hour of my ride this morning— heat exhaustion got the better of me. Concerned for my health & safety, my team asked me to stop my ride. Honestly, I’m amazed I’ve endured the past 14 days. Conditions have been really tough.
I hate to quit, but it’s the right choice this time. I just can’t manage race pace in the heat. It was nice to finish the ride going past Fontainebleau in the center of France with a sweet crew.
We’re heading to Switzerland and then back home— maybe adding a quick stop in Lithuania
🇱🇹

Thanks to everyone for cheering me on and riding with me— truly great to see people coming together & celebrating the sport."
The only sensible decision.

215 miles behind. I think the heat must be getting to her.

A lot can still happen.

It is a real shame, she put in a sterling effort and I really hoped she could do it. As she points out the heat will be following her route, she was due to pass by where I live in a few days and the temperatures are due to be in the high thirties later this week. Riding relentlessly at a high pace for days on end in this heat would not be safe so her decision is understandable.

I couldn't help but wonder if she hadn't set out too late. High temperatures at this time of year, in this corner of Europe are not that unusual. Maybe there was some other weather issue later in the route she was trying to avoid, but setting out a month earlier would have avoided this extreme heat in Europe and looking at Amy and Kyle in Australia, the weather doesn't look to bad there at the moment either. So I'm not sure of her reasoning for the late departure.

I agree. April or May would be better. It may be a bit wet. But you can cycle in the rain. Once the heat sets in, you can only cycle at night and that would slow her down too much. What she did was impressive.
