Has anyone here got experience of Lake’s CX146 winter cycling shoe? I followed the advice on Lake’s website and measured my feet to come up with a size – 44 in a wide fitting.

With no local shops stocking them I bought a pair on-line. When they arrived, I could hardly squeeze my foot into the shoe. It took some effort and the shoe was incredibly tight. I’ve returned them and I’m now considering my options. I like the look of the shoe and they receive good reviews. As a 44 had a vice like grip I’m wondering if I should skip 45 and opt for a 46.

It would be interesting to hear other folk’s experience of the CX146 or winter shoes in general.

Thanks in advance.

Yes I brought some just over a year ago.

The locking mechanism broke after a only a few rides so I returned them for a refund. The construction of them is very solid but imo they are ugly heavy boot - I was quite glad to be able to get my money back .

I went for the northwave equivalent in the end - personally I feel they suit me better, lighter no bulky and no cold feet. And getting them on and off is as easy as shoes.

I dare say if you are doing extreme long rides in foul weather the lakes may be better tool - but for my type of riding the northwave tick more boxes

Can't comment on Lakes but when I bought my Shimano winter boots years ago the shop owner told me to go a size larger than what I'd have in an ordinary shoe. He was spot on. Mine are comfy and warm. I've space to wear thicker socks too. It's cured getting cold feet. If it gets super cold I still wear overshoes. I'd definitely go Shimano again I think but I'll keep these till they fall to bits lol.

Not that particular model but I do have a few pairs of Lake shoes. What is your normal size as I think they fit fairly true to your normal cycling shoe size?

They are a tricky brand though as they have different shoe lasts and the widths mean that their sizing does come out as fairly irregular when trying to compare across different models.

As I understand it now, the current wide shoe width is actually what was previously the regular width, so not all that wide!

I have 2 pairs of Lake shoes. For the first pair which I bought from a shop in Northallerton, I got my feet measured and the guy in shop got me pair in that size which are 42.5 wide fitting. They are a single boa fastening. My second pair which I bought on line and got for just over half price are more expensive double boa fastening and they feel snugger than the first pair.
So as midlands says above slightly different fits on different models.

Same with any shoe - i.e. different models can fit differently. Shimano all used to be the same, as the sole was retained through much of the range (Torbal), but the newer shoes have changed and are narrower.

I have:
- Lake CX218 in 44.5 wide that are a tight but comfortable fit
- Lake CX238 in 45 wide that are very loose
- Lake CX333 in 44.5 wide that are between the two
- Lake CX146 in 45 wide that are tight

My experience would suggest that the winter boots come up small for a given size so either size up or look elsewhere.

I dont have the CX146 boots, but I do have two pairs of Lake shoes, both in a wide fitting.

having been through a number of brands mainly bought on line but some from the local LBS, I bought the Lake shoes from a bike fit guy. He checked my feet and advised the size. He set the cleats and they are the most comfortable shoes.

i have a pair of Shimano boots for commuting in bad weather and shoes that I use on the turbo. When their done I will be 100% Lake shoes.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my query about the Lake CX146 winter shoe. Your thoughts and observations have been helpful and assisted me in making my next move.

Now I've received my refund from the major on-line retailer for the (too small) pair I returned, I've placed another order. This time I've gone for a 46 wide.

While doing further research about the shoe I found this Youtube video which made some useful comments about sizing. In case anyone else is curious about the CX146 winter shoe I'll share it below.

Again, many thanks.
