I'm taking the husband to the lakes for his birthday next month...we're booked into the Drunken Duck for dinner, which is the site of our best ever meal, so we're very excited.

Planning to spend the Saturday careering round the lakes on the bikes - any bright ideas where? We're staying in Windermere and would look to do 40 - 50miles with some good hills chucked in. I don't know the area very well so would welcome some ideas.

Ferry across Windermere from the Marina, then north of Esthwaite Water and Coniston Water and down to Broughton Mills (or south then west on small roads), over to Dunnerdale, up over to Cockley Beck, over Wrynose to Little Langdale, then several choices but I would go Skelwith Bridge, Skelwith Fold, Outgate, B5285 and back over the ferry.

I haven't measured it but it looks about 50 miles. Ticks one notable hill (Wrynose Pass) and lots of enjoyable smaller ones; I like ferries on a bike, too.

North and east of Windermere there are fewer roads and they are a lot busier. Going south, Cartmel Priory is worth a look and the village used to have an excellent pub, but the hills are just bimbles. Go West, young woman!

Hey Cathrine, glad to see you enjoyed your Euro Tour & got back all safe & sound. For your Lakes weekend, you may want to look at this:-

I'm from Lancs originally, but now live in Aus. I'll be back for a long break next week & intend to go to the Lakes also (around the same time, I'll be the one with the Aussie flag on the rack). Knowing the area a bit & looking at this I found a good place to start.

This is another site to look at:-

These guys seem to enjoy them selves!
