Mrs Goth wants me to get laminate flooring put down in the spare room. As I am completely naff at anything DIY, I plan on buying the laminate flooring myself and then getting someone to lay it. The question is how many packs of flooring should I buy?

The room measures 2.75m X 2.60m.

Thanks in advance

It is very easy to do, I did our entire house when we first moved in. Most has now been carpeted but it is incredibly quick and easy to lay.

You have just over seven square metres to cover, the packs of flooring will tell you how much space it covers, just buy an extra pack,to allow for cutting, and if its not used, the shop should take it back,if unopened.Give it a go,i did,as long as your room is not a funny shape, you will manage, just make sure you have plenty of chocks,to keep the boards about half an inch off the skirting.

Depends on the area covered by one pack and the amount of waste (off-cuts) per pack. Why don't you first find someone to lay it and ask them how many packs you need to buy?

A tip. The labour cost for this sort of job will be considerable, may even exceed the cost of materials. Don't go for the cheapest flooring available, look around for better quality stuff. We had our entire ground floor (kitchen excepted) re-floored a few years ago, and we went for high quality oak from a specialist supplier (not a DIY). I think the investment paid off. PM me if you want details.

be aware that if the room is upstairs noise travels down through laminate flooring,You can buy some sound deadening material that you can put down first before you lay the floor.

Even I did it in our dining room, it's not that hard.

Top Tip: If you have an oversized mirror to hang, make sure the fixings are in place before you lay the flooring and that you can hang it without dropping it on the floor, smashing it and digging great big chunks out of the flooring (which can't be repaired without digging the whole lot up again).

Oh, and if cutting it - use a manual saw as much as possible - the dust is terrible, or cut outside.

If you to use a jigsaw, make sure it's somewhere well ventilated..... I've learnt...sort eyes and dodgy chest for a day or two.

Or get someone to fit the carpet for you....

Yeah - it took a carpet fitter under 1 hour to do 2 bedrooms in my house. Nice job too.

Having lived in a rented house with stripped floors upstairs, I would always fit carpet instead.
