A 1tb drive will have roughly 4 times the space of a 256 gb one. This will only really matter if you have lots of big files like video, music and photos. But you can always store those on an external drive.

Where the SSD shines is speed. Your PC will start, run and shut down faster.

Bear in mind that an SSD ages. If you do a lot of disk writes it ages faster. They are also generally smaller that a hard drive and cost more, as has already been said.

I'd also buy from JL, but I got fed up with Win8 on my last purchase and went to Linux Mint, it's very like WinXP and has a lot of free software available. Libre Office has applications to do all the things MS Office does and produces compatible files but is free.

I just bought a HP laptop last week as my main desktop pc has been consigned to mini cks bedroom as it took up to much space downstairs and now that i dont do gaming anymore it was not being utilized, i am happy enough with it
8 gig ram ( sharedgfx)
dual core intel cpu
2 tb hard drive
15.6 "screen
Came with windows 10 installed even though it says windows 8 with fre upgrade.

I don't even know what that means. I will need to be able to work on MS office documents from numerous sources
You can use LibreOffice on Linux with MS Office formats, but many long term windoze people won't like it because there are some differences. Also, I don't think the formatting compatibility is 100% when switching from MS Office to LibreOffice, but then again, I'm not convinced that MS Office is 100% backwards compatible with itself when switching from .doc to .docx for example.

Maybe when you have transitioned from old laptop to new laptop, you could try running linux on the old laptop. If all the hardware works ok, you will likely discover that it still functions at a respectable speed, as windoze usually seems to be a terrible drain on system resources after a few years of updates.

I'm going to give this a bump...didn't bother getting a laptop on Black Friday

This looks a decent deal, especially if JL bring the price down in their Christmas sale later

I constantly toy with the idea of a MacBook Pro, but the higher cost for what seems a lesser spec is off putting and seems unnecessary for my MS office and surfing needs (the latter covered really by iPad and now an iPhone 6S plus!)

I realise the Mac will hold its value much better but it's £250 more for i5 vs i7

Ok it's down to £530 in JL sale seems a no brainer!

Much as I like my MacBook, that Lenovo does make Macs look too expensive.

I take it you are OK with 128gb storage.

It would be plenty for me, but not enough for someone who wants to store lots of video.

That'll be fine for me, it'll be for work, just be office documents etc. I don't store any video. Presumably can add external HDD etc

Just ordered one in white. Can always return if a better deal comes along but almost half the price of a MacBook

Sounds good.

Plenty of external storage options if you ever need more room.

The fast processor and solid state drive should make the Lenovo feel nice and snappy in use.

Could use cloud storage as well.

Cloud storage is fine, but has real issues for practical use.

Unless you have access to the cloud then you cannot access the documents it stores. Few PCs have such an ability as they rely on access through HotSpots

The only alternative is tethering to a phone or buying a purpose built WiFi /MiFi system to provide access

I used a usb mobile modem, mostly these days I use my own wifi.

Rather charmingly JL have taken a further £30 off the price, have applied for a price match. I've not even opened the package yet!
