Hi I'm doing London to Paris for action medical research in July and want to take a large saddle bag to carry spare tubes, bit of food, leg/arm warmers and a jacket. Anyone got any recommendations? Don't want to spend too much as probably hardly ever get used again. I was looking at an ortlieb 2.7ltr one for £33, Any thoughts?

I have the medium ortlieb saddle bag and love it - sometimes wish I had purchased the larger version. It is totally waterproof if you do it up correctly - and that is the trick. Otherwise I think you should get what you want it in. In the medium one, I can squeeze in my (largish) compact camera, multitool kit, tyre levers, patches, and leg warmers just...

Would really like one to fit a pair of trainers in for when I'm off the bike but think I'm asking too much. Especially without spending a fortune.

Looks good but will probably never use it again, want something in between but can't find anything. Think I'm going to end up with the ortlieb as it probably would get used again. Would be nice to see one in the flesh though, actually be nice to see them side by side. Trouble with Internet. ......too much choice!!
Something like THIS maybe ... I have one and it carries everything I need ..shop around, you might find it cheaper

I've got Altura Arran panniers although I've only got the 16 litre ones. They're pretty good and you can fit loads in them (not that I tour, I bought them for commuting) but I wish the fabric was a bit tougher. That might be down to the fact I was constantly whacking them on walls and stuff though.

Add the price of a pannier rack to the panniers and the OP's limited budget is well and truly busted.

I know, I was just commenting on how decent Altura stuff is considering it isn't that expensive, especially considering Ortlieb stuff etc is 4x the price.

That Ortlieb one looks pretty darned small. I would consider a waist pack. I have an old Gap one with two bottle holders into which you can stuff jackets/leg/arm warmers etc which is similar in size to this http://www.wiggle.co.uk/inov-8-race-elite-35-waist-bag-1/ (that was the first one I found having typed in waist pack). Being low down it does not cause weight or sweat problems on the odd occasion I have used mine

I have small Invo8 for running and they are nice kit. Depends if you would reuse.

I used one of these, amazing bag! Cost a bit, but British well made, strong, water proof bag. It can open out to make more space too. I could fit wet weather boots, coat, food, spare water bottles, first aid pouch, spare inner tubes and pump, and god knows what else

I use the AlpKit Koala. It's a roll-top saddle bag and is excellent. A bit pricey at 65 quid, but it is proving to be durable.
