In general yes...but for city riding?
And its this 'tribalism' that we need to address.
.
This, last few words of your post...is exactly why I suggest a licence scheme, IN CITIES.

The rest of your post is, I'm afraid missing my point entirely. I'm not debating lawlessness or damage quota's or even safety (directly)

I suggest a city licencing scheme will remove boundary's...the tribalism you mention... and put us all in the same camp. Admittedly we shall all then be in the "City tribe" but at least we shall ALL be in it.

Keep in mind, as I have said continuously throughout this thread, this isn't just a city licence for cyclists, Its all city users, so each are trained on the others vulnerability and rights.

I have serious doubts that cabbies, in general, would feel part of the same 'tribe' as cyclists, were they all to sign up to a contract of some description.

It seems to me that cyclists are an irritant, and therefore people find a reason to complaint about them.

The running red lights complaint is absurd - drivers don't, on the whole, care that much when laws are broken in front of them, in my experience.

Perhaps if we all had cycle license or some sort of tax maybe it would stop a lot of people moaning we shouldn't be using the roads

Can you think of anything that we do that you don't want the Government to regulate and tax, and if so what makes them different from cycling?

Overwhelmingly, the real danger on the road comes from motor vehicles. Pretending that it's a bicycle problem is a red herring.

The fella who put together the rather slack article gets slaughtered in an argument in the comments bit by somebody who is evidently better informed and a better writer. Even after he tries to explain/justify some parts, he gets ripped apart again, rightly. Quite amusing.
But seriously, this is offensively lazy and pathetically provocative journalism.

I am very sure it wouldn't. Education is essential. These people must be made to understand why road tax was abolished, and that the roads are free to use at the point of delivery.

Why not a VED disk on bikes?
£0.00 per year of course, like all low emission vehicles.
Suppose it would cost maybe another £10 a year on top of all VED charged on non-low emmission vehicles.
I'd pay that much just to shut these t@$$ers up.

Quoted for truth.

More cyclists and more infrastructure will enforce better behaviour from drivers, and it'll reduce the death toll for all classes of road user.

It won't shut them up. They are guilty of what is effectively racism. TRL549, treating cyclists as members of an out-tribe. Tax is just the shortest and most efficient way for them to express this bigotry.
