FWIW that fount of knowledge Wiktionnaire says that ailleurs is "Plutôt que directement issu du latin

inferior et
altior."
I also found out that, if you go back far enough, it is related to English 'else'.
Just saying, like - it's probably best not to bog this thread down too far with Indo-European etymologies
