And for extra green lawns you can buy Urea (there is a slightly cheaper alternative!).

My MinL's front lawn has lush, bright green 'fairy ring's where next door's labrador fertilises her grass each morning...

How come the grass down the local park is so much better than mine?
Park grass must get cut twice a year max and it is lush and weed-free!

Moss thrives in damp, shady areas, whereas grass doesn't. Hence a green sward of MOSS!

This is a helpful site http://www.lawnexperts.co.uk/tacklingmoss.html and with regular gardening, you'll soon have a lawn to be proud of.

And, as Beebo says, definitely use a cylinder mower, for the lovely stripe effect!

Bootiful!

I used to think my neighbours lawns were somehow greener than mine, but thinking about it, I'm pretty sure it's down to the angle I'm looking at them.

Either that or they secretly paint them when I'm out.

Over the years I think I must have had about 3 Flymo hover mowers and when the most recent one broke down this year I ended up going with a Bosch rotary instead. I'm not exaggerating but the rotary is much easier to use, its so much faster and the cuts the grass far better than the hover ever did. What I really can't understand is why I spent so many years messing around with a hover which was a real pain to maneuver, used to flatten (rather than cut) the grass and used to labour in long grass. Not only does the rotary give a really good cut, but it has a roller that leaves nice stripes too. For the first time ever my grass is starting to look like a lawn.

PS. I think my Bosch Rotak 34 Electric Rotary Mower cost about £85.

Lawnmowers are all about dismantling carburetors, untangling rope pull-starts, and sharpening blades and should be selected on the basis of maximum potential fun. Any grass cutting achieved is a bonus.

Bosch Rotak + 1.

Tried a battery electric and two petrols before and, faff of keeping cable out of blades excepted, the Bosch is winner by a mile.
