My parents mustn't have put much value on me, they sent me to school on a bike!

Me too

Hmm thats a good point, when I was a kid walking to school in the 70's there was always three or four of us together, picking up more on the way to the gate. But then *no-one* went in the car. We had one car and my dad used it to get to work. Point is there was always a gang of us, less cars about and less people generally tbh. It is absolute chaos at my kids' school in the morning.

Same here - Everyone walked back then, my dad needed the car for work.
I grew up in the 70's, in a quiet village, lived on a cul de sac & there were 11 of us all going to same school at one point - safety in numbers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the bad parenting critics in this thread made their own way to school from a young age.

See above ;)
Most of us who have commented have made the same points - It was over 30yrs ago, far less traffic, no everyone had a car & most importantly, we all seemed to have walked in a group with either friends or siblings, who would have stuck up for each other if anything went wrong.

QFT, there's no WAY i would do this, i mean your kids are your life you know? you wouldn't just let em out and then drive off thats like horrible you'd at least see em through the gates safe!
i'm more shocked by the driver doing that then the fact that he did this in the middle of traffic!

For heaven's sake at age 7, I was getting the bus to school. Do children need to be molly coddled quite as much as the Daily Mail proposes and protected from nasty people hiding behind every bush.

I think Mummy has summed it up , less cars at people tended to look out for each other. When my mum died when i was 10 my father had to try to go to work and get us all ready for school, the locals would come round and help us out.

I would especially like to thank Myra , a Lady who helped us out a lot !!!

Nowadays the roiads are busier ,even in the same street no one talks to each other yet alone looks out for you .
