Some people just have bags of cash. If i was a total noob, but stupidly wealthy, i'd prob kit myself out like a pro from day 1.

Leave Sir Alan out of this.

I encountered a lad on a lime-green bianchi classic a couple of months ago, fully kitted out in Garmin complete with over sized giro ionos crash hat.

He was really spinning, and I mean very high cadence, he really was going nowhere fast.

As I caught up I stopped for a chat, said my hellos etc and asked if he was in training for something. He said no, he was just going home and I relased he was a newbie. So I said he should probably add more resitance to the gearing. He said he didn't know how to change gear. So I had to show him.

Haven't seen him since, expect all that spinning has turned him into a local Lance.

+1 to the above sentiments. The 'all the gear no idea' mentality seems to come from jealousy IMO.

Nah, you've gotta come up the hard way. I built my first racer out of community workshop spares in my free time. Keeping it old skool (did I spell that properly?).

Certainly had me laughing a lot bit .

Not in a nasty way......but it would be pretty funny! Good that he's on a bike though, and putting money back into the economy.

That's precisley why when I started I normally cycled in shorts, t-shirt and trainers.......so when I was pushing my bike up a hill, people knew I was a novice .

And then pay someone to show me how to use it properly.

Come to think of it, maybe the LBS was remiss in not showing him how to set up his new gear properly.

Either that, or a "helpful" chap/lass on the other end of the phone.

I imagine the gentleman had seen a flash bike in the LBS, then found it cheaper online, and rang the order line to ask a few questions about it .

Now fast forward a few days. The gentleman has just signed for delivery, opened up the box, and stands there in wonder, clueless, staring at his shiny new bike. No-one there to adjust the bike and saddle, hell, he may even have a frame size he'd trade in for the next one up or down if he'd actually gone into the shop and tried them out.

I hope the bike's OK for him after all, only needs a bit of adjustment, and that he only needs a few tips & hints to start off a happy cycling life.

I felt like a bit of a (All the gear ...) twat on Sunday:blush:
Changed my Pompino back to single-speed (70") and went for a ride in the Surrey/Kent 'hills'. Anyway, I approached a group of riders ahead, going a little slow for me. So I started to overtake, just as the road started to go downhill. Enter comedy moment where my legs are spinning at what seems like 120+ cadence to get past and beyond earshot or ridicule.
