I assume it was a Spanish colony and so they spoke Spanish. Every day's a school day.
There's an area of the Philippines where they still speak a form of Spanish, but it is more of a creole than proper Spanish, and rather hard to understand for a Spanish speaker. The Philippines being rather far and only loosely controlled from the metropolis never quite took to speaking Spanish.

I learned the other day (from Richard Osman's House of Games) that they still use the peso as their currency.
