I have got the Brooks leather tape on my audax bike which I am pleased with. A while ago I made my own leather tape from an old leather jacket cut into 3cm wide strips and sown together and the result has been quite good. Only this weekend I was given two leather chairs which were being thrown out in the skip so I scalped the chairs for the skins. Ive got quite a bit of material now to experiment with......

Clever idea!

If you know what's good for you ...
I've had the Brooks for 2 years now. Very good indeed - has barely worn during the 10 000 kms I've done with it in all weathers, including Norwegian rain. Didn't know it was made in China, though; and there was me thinking I was buying British. I'll go for the French tape next time.

Yes, it was a surprise to me too. When I wrote and asked them about it they said it was because they couldn't get the proper quality and workmanship in England, something I found a bit odd. Certainly Gilles Berthoud manages very nicely over there in France, and what's more they make all of their saddlebags by hand in France as well. Brooks' I learned, after I bought two if their leather saddlebags, are made in China. I believe they made an attempt to bring the production of their bags back to England (and to Italy) but I heard something recently to suggest they'd gone back to China.

Yes its a shame its not British made but when my Brooks bar tape eventually needs replacing i'l have no problem putting on my bike again..IMHO its the best

Most leather products come from a place called Sialkot in Pakistan nowadays. They serve the sports industry very well being the largest producer of hand sewn footballs amongst other as well as the equine saddlery, and motorcycle clothing markets.

What really annoys me is the way the company presents itself as being as British as Elgar's Enigma Variations or cricket in the Village green. One of the reasons why I spent a lot of money on their tape is that I wanted to pay that little bit more to help keep jobs in countries where people have a decent wage and working conditions, rather than to effectively condone modern day slavery. Let's not forget as well that on all their tape is this:

Oh, believe me, I haven't forgotten. I no longer use the Challenge leather saddle bags I bought from them, and which I discovered belatedly were made in China. Not that the bags are poorly made; they are not. Not that I hate the Chinese; I don't. I just felt as though I had been misled into paying a premium for something I didn't receive. The English origin, roots and manufacture is very much a part of Brooks' perceived value.

A good review, I may replace the white bar tape with black leather tape when bike reaches its first birthday, as much as a begrudge it, I'll probably go with the Brooks, for no other reason other than I have a Brooke's saddle. Silly I know, I'm a fool to myself.

Not at all silly. It's good tape. My gripe is with Brooks for promoting themselves as quintessentially English, when they get their goods from China. The tape itself is very nice and, as you say, matches the Brooks saddles ( which are made in England)

Have you tried any of the others?
Not tried any others. For 3 years i just put up with the bar tape that came with my bike (a Dawes Galaxy) bought from new...then i decided it needed a wee makeover so went for a Brooks B17 saddle and matching bar tape. They made a huge difference to an already comfy bike to cycle and gives a better look

Yes, it is a great look and the big advantage Brooks has there is that the leather matches their own excellent saddles (which are English made) Gilles Berthoud, whose more expensive and luxurious feeling tape I find I prefer, also makes saddles but their saddles are quite expensive and so far nothing has ever even come close to making me want to use anything other than the tried and true Brooks B-17!
