I like using toe clips on my commute bike so I don't have to change shoes at work and get up hills faster. However some toe clips, typically the ones without a strap tend to scrape my shoes. Have just brought some replacement shoes I don't want them to go the way of the last pair. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Perhaps experiment with ReStraps or power grips as an alternative?

I run clips and straps on my fixed, the bike thats my commuter, winter bike and general runabout, I like the versatility that allows me to use any boots or shoes I like with good basic foot retention, I commute in steel toe capped boots, I use clipless on my summer Sunday best bike.

Thanks for everyone's quick replies. While I love the look of the shoes at £174 a go they just bit out of my price range! However the straps are a brilliant suggestion. I've never seen them before, such is the wonder of cc.

I'd get some cycle touring shoes and leave the everyday shoes at work.

Some of us don't want the faff of having to change footwear twice a day, I've been commuting in steel toe capped boots for over 30 years, I've been using clips and straps with the boots for over 25 years, I'll normally use the metal clips, I'll straighten them then rebend them round the boots.

Depends if your shoes need to be smart. Cycle shoes are still the best for the job though, and I won't use anything else, only 27 years of cycle specific shoes myself.. And I'm 43.

I save my cycle shoes for the Sunday rides, I don't find I need cycle shoes for commuting or general running around, for that sort of stuff normal shoes do just as well.

I just bought s pair of Terry Brown's hand made cycling shoes. He makes them for Spa Cycles, i went to him direct.

I suspect that the answer to your predicament is a pair of steel clips with leather protective sleeves - of the sort sold by Velo Orange.

That's what we had, back in the day. Apparently, we still have them . I use old golf shoes with the spikes removed for commuting. Very stiff soles, so your feet don't bend while pushing the pedal.

Thanks alicat for the link. I've just purchased a pair. I do one of those jobs that requires smart yet rugged shoes. I used to buy Dr Martins but since they no longer make them in the UK I've switched Solovair. I picked up a pair of boots on fleebay for £39.95.
