You could also get nearly 3 gallons of petrol. I vaguely remember it being 7/6d. I got half a crown pocket money and could buy loads......thats 12.5p for those of more tender years!

A mate, I used to teach with, told me he'd read in the Times Ed. that an inspector had gone into a school in the mid 80's and found a Maths teacher still teaching £/s/d. When he was questioned why. The Maths teacher is reported have told the inspector that he thought it might come back. Obviously a UKIP member ahead of his time .

I remember the huge Copper Cartwheel two pence pieces which weighed 2 ounces and would wear a hole in your trousers before you got home

Ah but you also spent two months wages on a rubbish TV instead of a weeks wage on a decent one now.

Most electrical goods were really rubbish, and we lived on mashed potato and chops or stuff cooked in the chip pan. TV shut down at 11.30 on most nights and all the clothes were nylon.
