This may be an obvious question, but many of you on here seem clued up on these sorts of things so I thought I'd ask.

The missus and I have become quite good fans of Road Wars of late (a Sky3 (I think) programme following Thames Valley police amongst others).
We were watching the other night and a chappy was caught driving with only a provisional driving license with nobody else in the car (obviously wrong). For this, he received "6pts on his license".
Now, given that a driver who passes their test is only allowed to accumulate 6pts in the first 2 years, does this mean that as soon as he passes his test a policeman leans over and *yoink* "I'll take that"? (ok, not literally, but I mean that his new license becomes instantly invalid?)
If so, what's the incentive for the guy to take his test? Surely it's an incentive for him to keep driving without a license?

Thanks,

MG

If he wants to drive again he will have to take his test, and pay an almighty insurance premium when they get their license back. If he drives without a license and gets caught he risks jail.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the response.

This guy had a provisional license (so has not yet taken a test), and yet had 6pts applied to it (because of driving without having a full license).
So, when he takes and passes his test, he'll have a license with 6pts already on it (the maximum allowed) so it would automatically be taken away the moment he passes?

The DVLA say that you can take your test, and if you pass you will get your license in full. But you are not allowed to accumulate any more points in the next 2 years. If you do, then your license is revoked.
The 6 points you get when you are on provisional last for 4 years, and unlike other points, you must apply to the DVLA for them to be removed.

Hi Gaz,

Thanks for the response. That makes a bit more sense.

We're becoming quite a fan of "Road Wars" this end. Though the sentences never seem harsh enough. They had one chap who was disqualified from driving (IIRC without a license) and they caught him driving so gave him a smallish fine and ..... 6pts! Surely this is meaningless if they are giving him 6pts on his non-existent license?!
Or have I just lost the plot?

The sentences are insane.
You can get a really reckless car chase, with the fleeing driver forcing oncoming traffic off the road, mounting pavements at speed etc and they typically get a few points on their non existent license and less than £200.00 fine
