..or to put it another way, he is a fat, greedy barsteward.
Please don't talk about our former deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in that way.

I've never followed snooker, but the Internet gives us access to things we wouldn't turn a page to read...

I was fascinated by a piece saying that Stephen Lee (who?) has been banned from the game for twelve years. Not fascinated by the length of the ban or what he did to deserve it or how good he was or wasn't, but by video footage of him. He really does look the most unhealthy professional sportsman I've ever seen. He appeared about to flake out.

There is some argument about whether his 12-year ban ought to have been a life ban. From the way he was huffing and puffing in the interview, I'd say they were one and the same thing.

I feel both sad and slightly, smugly middle class for thinking that, but I do think it. This is not a chap for using the stairs when the lift breaks down, is it?

Does he have any competition in the 'unlikely professional sportsman' category.
Hadn't seen the news, but I've always thought he was rather large and piggy looking. What has he been banned for?

When I was in the Civil Service, meetings at the Cabinet Office were occasionally pushed up Whitehall (lack of space, double bookings etc) to that place behind Horse Guards where Prescott's office used to be. I forget the name of the building... Chaps on horses outside and a nice little courtyard.

On one occasion, we were all getting into the coffee and biscuits when the Chair said "I don't want to alarm any of you, but this is the room where the DPM used to conduct private meetings with his secretary after office hours.

You have never seen so many glasses, plates and coffee cups lifted so quickly from a committee table.

Your comments regarding his weight are in poor taste.

Your comments regarding his weight are in poor taste.

My apologies if I offend. Much of what I write on these pages is in poor taste.

In my defence, I make no mention of his weight. I'm overweight myself, not that that excuses poor taste. But I make no mention of his weight in my OP or elsewhere. It is his general appearence and his 'huffing and puffing' that give the impression he might want to think about putting his affairs in order.

My wife has a spectacularly spherical aunt who is past eighty-five and going strong apart from some weak ankles. She does not huff and puff like this chap, and he is under forty. My point was not about weight.

The one thing that always struck me about Stephen Lee when I used to be more interested in Snooker was the fact that he rarely seemed to smile, he was always this sour faced gargoyle of a man.

As for his weight, well, he was always a big boy, but seeing him in the news shocked me, he didn't look at all good/well.

12 years though? That's a bit harsh, I mean, didn't John Higgins do something similar and got a ban that was a fraction of that time?
